What Are the Benefits of Alternative Down?
More and more people are waking up tired and at times with allergy-like symptoms. Many are quick to jump to the conclusion that they are allergic to their feather or down pillows and duvets. (Feather allergies are actually extremely rare - check out our blog "Why You Aren't Actually Allergic to Your Pillow!".)
As the demand for alternative down products is on the rise, suppliers everywhere are producing Down Alternative, Hypo-Allergenic, Anti-Microbial, Dust-Mite Resistant and the list goes on. High demand means competitive markets which often leave consumers both confused and at times misinformed. With that in mind, here is what you need to know about alternative down pillows and duvets.
What is Alternative Down?
Alternative Down refers to materials that are said to replicate the look and feel of feather & down products. For the purpose of this article we are referring to pillows and duvets specifically. The most popular replacements for feather and down in this case are synthetic down, wool, latex and silk.
What Is Synthetic Down?
Synthetic down is a man made polyester fibre that is said to best resemble a true down feel. Shorter, finer threads will make for a fluffier, softer result. Choose a reputable supplier as higher levels of chemicals can often be used to create a "hypo-allergenic", "anti-microbial" product.
Wool
Wool is naturally anti-microbial and dust mite resistant. It is a fantastic choice for those who need temperature control. It whisks away moisture and releases it back into the air, leaving you cool and dry. While it won't look or feel like down, a quality made wool comforter can still create a cozy and comfortable sleeping environment.
Latex
Latex, like wool, has natural anti-microbial and anti-allergen properties. It too helps create a cooler sleeping environment. It's better known feature is that, as a pillow, it creates ideal support for side sleepers.
Silk
Silk duvets are known for their light weight and are very good for temperature control. While they are practical for those who have the tendency to be too warm at night, they are not the best choice for a designer finished look as they aren't big on fill.
