A Look Back at the Evolution of Style — and the People Who Shaped It

When TOILE first opened its doors over 25 years ago, the world of luxury bedding looked very different.

Duvets were the height of fashion — extravagantly fluffy and often dressed in bold, vibrant prints. Not only did they provide comfort, but duvet covers were a statement piece, often serving as the main decorative feature in the bedroom. They were theatrical, expressive, and full of personality.

As time passed, tastes evolved. The desire for cleaner, more tailored beds led to the rise of the coverlet — a solution to the casual, often wrinkled appearance of a full duvet. With its versatility, the coverlet could drape gracefully over a duvet or stand alone as a refined top layer, with the duvet folded neatly at the foot of the bed for added texture and warmth.

Then came the era of “Hotel Sheeting.” Inspired by boutique hotels and European refinement, this style emphasized crisp white sheets adorned with subtle embroidery — double or triple lines in soft hues that added a hint of color without overpowering the serenity of the space.

Today, we’re seeing a renewed appreciation for blankets and layering. While duvets remain a staple in various weights and fills, many of our clients now opt for tucked-in blankets and coverlets that reflect a more minimal, modern aesthetic. The look is cleaner. The sleep, more customized.
