Bedroom projects can be overwhelming, especially when you are doing multiple rooms. Aside from the nightstands, lighting, carpet & accessories, the bed is a project in itself. Even if you are considering a minimalist bedding style, you have an array of choices in terms of fabrics, a wide palette of neutral colours & a couple of touches to add texture. So, where do you start?
Your bed frame is like a piece of art that anchors the bedroom. Upholstered beds are great fun, as you can choose a variety of styles, finishings & an endless selection of fabric. Bringing in a rich, tufted velvet or velour bed carries an air of old hollywood glam. A minimalist style is perfected with a low profile bed with clean lines and upholstered in raw linen or wool. If you have absolutely fallen in love with a patterned fabric, there is no better showcase than your headboard!
Your mattress is your sleep’s lifeline. Your mattress needs to deliver a perfect balance of comfort & support. As we all have individual needs, there is no one mattress fits all. High end hotel grade mattresses are available for your home, bringing the luxury of a five star hotel to your bedroom. Organic mattresses offer outstanding comfort, longevity and an added height of health & wellness to your world.
Toppers are the icing on the cake in the world of luxury bedding. Not only do they provide an extra lush feeling, toppers are a practical way to refresh your current mattress. Down is number one in creating a cloud like feel. Wool & latex provide superior support & help regulate temperature, in addition to adding comfort.
PILLOWS & DUVETS
No bedroom project is complete without fresh pillows & duvets. Consider your personal preferences prior to purchase & take a look at investing in a higher quality product, as a well made duvet can last a decade, if not more. Choose a softer pillow if you sleep on your stomach, a firmer pillow if you are a side sleeper and something in between for sleeping on your back. Choose down for comfort with a feather core for good neck support. When looking for a duvet consider a loft of at least 600 for a pouffy finish, quality down for warmth without weight and well sewn baffle box construction to assure your down remains where it belongs, instead of in a clump at the bottom of the bed. The small detail of adding ties to both your duvet & duvet cover will help keep it evenly placed day & night. There are also great alternatives to down including microfibre and wool.
Next to your pillow & duvet, your sheet selection deserves your attention. After all, you spend every night face to face with your sheets. Linen is fabulous for summer months, percale cotton is perfect if you like a cool crisp feel and sateen cotton is silky soft to the touch. Thread count is not the only factor you should consider. A 300TC made with integrity will feel amazing and last a decade versus a 1000TC made of short fibres that will fall apart in a couple of years. If you are working with a moderate budget, consider springing for the sheets and cutting corners with the top of bed.
TOP OF BED
Top of bed can play two parts - aesthetics & practicality - and sometimes it does both. Play with textures and colours. Layer contrasting patterns on a solid duvet cover or layer textured, solid deco pillows, throws & coverlets for a neutral look that is anything but boring. Draw your duvet up to the top of your bed in the colder months with a blanket or coverlet folded at the foot of the bed for an added touch and then reverse the look for the summer months.
The days of stuffy old valences & draperies are behind us - unless of course, that is your preferred style! The market has amazing product ranging from blinds, panels, fabric and even shutters - there is something for every style & particular need. Who knew you could get this excited about window treatments?!?!
As daunting as a bedroom project may seem, don’t let it dampen the great fun you can have as you explore your options. Your bedroom is your retreat, the one room that should most reflect your true self and allow for absolute rest & relaxation. Whether you are breathing new life into your current bedroom with a few of the above mentioned pieces or starting from scratch, the results will be well worth the time & effort.
